DRIVING A CAR

Mallorca is beautiful. You will enjoy the island so much more if you venture out of the resorts and see it. Fuel prices and car rentals are lower than the U.K. and renting a car is easy. There are lots of car hire companies in Magaluf but if you prefer to use a British company, Autos Magaluf have been open even longer than we have and we have never heard any negative feedback about them. (Link to Autos Magaluf)
At roundabouts, be aware that when there are two lanes going on to and around a roundabout, most Spanish seem to always use the outer lane, even if they are going all way around. So always be aware when leaving the roundabout of the car to your right, as they may also be taking the same exit as you. Also, of course remember to go in an anti-clockwise direction.
The mountains are exceptionally beautiful, with the Almond Blossom in the valleys during Spring. If the resorts are a bit quieter, why not go for a drive and explore the beautiful scenery.

ACCOMODATION

Hotels and package holidays are not your only option. Why not have a look at private apartments for your next holiday? There 1000’s to choose from. You have loads more space, separate bedrooms for everyone, a fully equipped kitchen and most of the time the private apartment blocks are a lot quieter than some of the tourist complexes.  Our Sister Tina has several properties around the Calvia area, which are all beautifully decorated and furnished and even come supplied with games, toys and books for kids. Check out the following direct link, even if one of Tina’s is not what you are looking for there are 1000’s of others on the website to chose from :- www.holiday-rentals.co.uk  (pone el link a qui)In the property search field enter  54036 or 13062 to see some examples.

MAGALUF CHEMISTS

There is one directly opposite our “IN THE TOWN” branch. It is normally open Monday to Friday 9.30 to 1.30 and then 16.30 till 20.00 and on Saturday’s 9.30 to 1.30.
Most of the staff in all chemists speak adequate English and they have a reference book of brand names of medicines in different countries, so can normally sell you the equivalent brand made in Spain.
In each council area (i.e. Calvia), there is always a chemist open 24 hours a day. On their front door will be printed a list of days, opening times and the address of which branch is open. Unfortunately it is written in Catalan. If you need any help just ask the Tom Brown’s staff in restaurant opposite.

MEDICAL FACILITIES

Mallorca offers fantastic medical facilities, with numerous private clinics throughout the resorts. There are also large, state run emergency clinics in Santa Ponca and in Palma Nova areas. Hopefully, in the near future there will be a brand new larger facility opening at the entrance to Palma Nova, just off the motorway. Also the major hospitals in Palma are excellent and can easily cope with the vast number of visitors to the Island. Find out what they need to take with them.etc

PARKING

Anywhere, where there are no street markings on the side of the road, there are no parking restrictions. These are normally the roads at the back of the resorts. During the months of April to October, between 9.30 to 13.30 and 16.30 to 20.00 on Monday through to Friday, and on Saturday from 9.30 to 1.30, in the blue lined areas you can park for an hour and a half. You must write the time you have left your car, on a piece of paper and leave it visibly on your dash board. Be careful of disabled spaces, loading bays, taxi ranks, spaces reserved for motorbikes and areas close to entrances of hotels, where your car can prevent coaches getting through. Many tourists receive parking fines after thinking it is free to park, as there are no payment machines and the information about parking on the street signs is unfortunately only in Catalan. If you need a pen and paper just pop in to any Tom Brown’s and we will be glad to help.

Palma

Palma is a fantastic place to visit, to enjoy it even more take a map with you as it’s a big city. Download one from the councils website:- Palma tourism
Beware of the flower sellers as they are actually incredibly fast pick pockets. Anyone approaching you, offering you something like flowers, small bundles of herbs, etc, please politely tell them no and walk away.

IN MAGALUF

GENERAL

There are many great activities to do in Magaluf, such as the Water Parks, Go Karting, Fantastic Beaches with water sports,  Marineland (short bus ride), House of Katmandu, Golf Fantasia and Pirates Adventure show. Please check opening times as some are closed during winter months.

All the beaches in the resort have blue flags so you can enjoy bathing in the clean waters of the Med! There are life guards throughout the summer months and emergency medical facilities on both Magaluf and Palma Nova beaches.

Do note, that sometimes in the med, there can be quite an abundance of jelly fish, but this is only at certain times and  you can always check with the life guards or tourist information offices before letting your little ones race into the sea.

Everyone is welcome to use our toilets at any time but unfortunately there are no public toilets on the beach. Do be careful as some bars may ask you to buy a drink before using their toilets. However there are public toilets on Palma Nova beaches.

The tourist information office is situated in the center of Magaluf, opposite Bacos and Plaza café bars, the staff are very helpful and can all speak English. The one in Palma Nova is on the beach promenade next to the Cala Blanca hotel. www.visitcalvia.com

In Magaluf itself there are two Water Parks – Aqualand and Western Water Park., so you can certainly have fun, splashing away in the Sun! Don’t forget that there are nearly always offers to return on another day at a very cheap price. Also if you have kids, make sure you take high factor sun cream as the kids will be constantly in and out of the water. LINK AGUALAND / LINK WESTERN PARK

Next to AQUALAND is “GO KARTING” which caters for all ages, including a children’s Go Kart area, as well as the normal track for the speed demons amongst you! LINK KARTING

The HOUSE OF KATMANDU is situated near our Tom Brown´s Sports bar and is a great adventure for the children especially the mirror maze at the end. The building alone, being upside down is an absolute marvel in itself, with the attention to detail as good as anything similar in America. Don’t rush through though as it is worth reading all the information on each of the exhibits,or your journey will be over far too quickly. They also have a 4D cinema just outside which is great for both kids and adults, for more info here is the linkLINK HOUSE OF KATMANDU

MARINELAND  is loads of fun and has excellent Dolphin, Sea Lion and Parrot shows. In our family we have an argument whether the Dolphins or the Sea lions are better, so please choose your favourite and we can show the winner. Lots of e.mails have asked to remind parents that there is also an area for the kids to cool off in a mini water park section, so take a towel and bathers with you. There is also a small beach next door which can be a bit quieter than the tourist beaches. LINK MARINELAND

For something great to do when you leave Marineland, if you have time. is visit Puerto Portals, which is where the locals go to wine, dine and chill out. At the exit gate look to your right and walk up to the Barclays Bank, and then follow the road around to the right until you come to the entrance to the port, it’s only about 5 minutes.

There are nearly 800 moorings in this lively and trendy port and is a great place to sit and have a refreshing drink, while watching the world go by. “Wellies” and “Cappuccinos” seem to be the most popular with the British locals. If you have kids there are hundreds of fish in the water by the key side especially in front of “Branigans” restaurant. Take some bread with you so they can sit on the edge and feed them, just keep a hold onto the littler ones, (that’s the kids not the fish!). Baguette style bread is great as the fish seem to play football with it on the surface of the water.

A great way to spend some time is on one of the many BOAT TRIPS that leave from all the beaches, there are a number of different destinations and durations, don’t forget as always the essentials for your kids, sun tan lotion, bottles of water etc.

AROUND THE ISLAND

The new “Palma aquarium” is a really good trip, as they have 4 different sections and is so much more than just fish in tanks. After the traditional Aquarium section with touch screen information panels for each exhibit, there is a large Outside Garden area with a refreshments café, exhibits where the kids can pick up star fish, sea cucumbers etc, and a fun pirate ship climbing area. Then once inside again you go through a Jungle themed area with waterfalls and mist spayed throughout the path ways which is lovely and cooling. The final section is the Deep Ocean with glass walk through tunnels. LINK PALMA AQUARIUM

The “Soller Train” which leaves from Plaza España in palma is well worth doing as a reasonably priced day out. The carriages are the original wooden ones and there are also tourist trains which stop in the mountains for photos of the beautiful views. Once in Soller town there is a wonderful old tram to catch which takes you down to the port, which has a fantastic beach and loads of sea front cafes to choose from. Once back in Palma if you have kids there is a lovely park behind the station which has a large wooden kids play area and fountains to play in. Please check return times of the trams and trains at the station or at the following link

The walk ways through Magaluf, Palma Nova, Puerto Portals etc, are great in the winter months, and have small kids play parks dotted along the way.  The local council which is Calvia, built over 30 km of walkways through the Calvia area for every ones enjoyment. For a map go to :- www.visitcalvia.com

Best enjoyed by bicycle. There are several places in Magaluf and Palma Nova that you can rent bicycles e.g.in front of “The Prince William” pub.
In Santa Ponca there is the Jungle Park. Great for the more adventurous
